In Memoriam

In 1967 while in high school, Mike worked at Hawken as a custodian after school. In 1968 he was employed as full-time summer help, and shortly after that summer, he became a full-time Hawken employee in the grounds department before being named maintenance supervisor. Over the years, Mike completed 46 years of dedicated service to Hawken and was named recipient of the Marsh Award in 2001 and honored as a faculty emeritus upon his retirement in 2013. In addition, he was bestowed honorary alumnus status in 2007.  

Throughout his tenure at Hawken, Mike supervised the maintenance and custodial staffs at Lyndhurst and was involved with the coordination of many, many small and large projects. Always responsible, conscientious, hard-working, caring and sensitive, he was loved and respected by all who knew him. Mike is survived by his wife Deb, Hawken’s Lower School administrative assistant.

Visiting hours are at the Schulte Mahon Murphy Funeral Home, 5252 Mayfield Rd in Lyndhurst on Wednesday, Feb. 14 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm and Thursday, Feb. 15 from 4 - 6 pm. There will be a service/celebration for Mike at 6 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
