Media Lab

In addition to the Fabrication Lab, Hawken’s maker spaces include a new Media and Communications Lab, also known as the M.A.C. lab. With its floor-to-ceiling whiteboard walls, the lab features a classroom with two large viewing display monitors; a production studio with a green screen covering one and one-half walls, black drapes lining the remaining walls and a ceiling grid for lighting; a video editing suite; an audio recording and editing suite and a broadcasting suite. Each suite features soundproof doors and acoustical tiles. The lab includes twelve high-end video and audio computer stations as well as a number of HD camcorders and cameras.
By design, there is no curriculum structured around the M.A.C. lab. Instead, the lab provides studio space that enables for students to engage their interest in and passion for video, audio, film, recording and producing. The lab is open for clubs and activities including the Film Club, personal projects and independent study projects.

Numerous teachers have utilized the space to implement programming in performing arts, humanities, and photography, and film classes. Beginning photographers have used the space to explore studio portraiture and lighting; students in acting classes utilize the lab to learn acting for the camera techniques; filmmaking students have used the sound booths for dubbing video, the main lab area for editing, and the production studio and green screen for video production and other film projects. The lab has also been used for animation and documentary projects.
