Counter-terrorism Expert Visits Hawken

Students in Katie Scott’s Foreign Policy and Middle East class recently welcomed guest speaker Professor Karl Kaltenthaler, professor of political science at the University of Akron, who spoke to them about the current intel on ISIL and Al Qaeda.

Kaltenthaler addressed topics including Salafism, the psychology behind jihadism, and the ISIL threat in both Europe and the United States, taking questions from students as they arose. He also shared details about his role as a government contractor who helps gather and analyze data to support national security in countering violent extremism, encouraging interested students to pursue careers in national security. “I’d love to see more smart young people go into these jobs to help keep America safe,” he said.
