This win marks the girls team’s 23rd consecutive state title and their 31st in program history. Outperforming their impressive third place finish in 2020, the boys' recent win marks their fourth overall championship. Not to be outdone, Angus took first place handily in this year’s diving tournament after finishing as runner-up in the 2020 tournament.
The girls tournament was held on Wednesday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, where they took first place in four events and, once again, won the championship in “overwhelming fashion.” Syndey Bare ’21 was named Swimmer of the Meet for her amazing 100 breaststroke win; Jessica Eden ’22 placed first in the 200 IM; and the relay team of Jessica, Maggie Mallett '22, Ella Gilson '21, and Chloe Katz '21 won the 400 freestyle relay. In the 500 freestyle, Tori Culotta ’22 placed first for the third year in a row, Chole Katz '21 placed second, Claire Pophal '21 placed third, and Sarah Pophal '24 placed sixth.
Girls All-Ohioans include Ariana Khan '21, (fifth in diving), Chloe Katz (third in the 200 freestyle and second in the 500 freestyle), Ella Gilson (fifth in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle), Sydney Bare, (first in 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 IM), Claire Pophal, (third in the 500 freestyle), Sarah Pophal, (fourth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 500 freestyle), Maggie Mallett, (fourth in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly), Jessica Eden, (first in the 200 IM and third in the 100 backstroke), Asma Khan ’23 (seventh in the 100 backstroke). All-Ohio girls relay teams include Gilson, Eden, Khan and Chloe Bautista ’23, who placed second in the 200 freestyle relay,and Khan, Bare, Mallett, and Bautista, who placed second in the 200 medley relay.
The boys tournament was held on Thursday in Canton, where the Hawks took the Division II state championship with a score of 228 points. They won the 400 freestyle relay and had a total of 10 podium finishes. Alex Podrez ’21 placed first in the 400 relay, third in the 200 medley relay, second in the 200 IM,, and seventh in breaststroke; Connor Brown ’21 placed first in the 400 relay, third in the 200 medley relay, fourth in the 200 IM, and fifth in the 100 backstroke; Michael Butler ’21 placed first in the 400 relay and third in the 500 freestyle; and Will Dietz ’22 placed first in the 400 relay and fifth in the 500 freestyle.
Boys All-Ohioans include Will Dietz (eighth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 500 freestyle), Alex Podrez, (second in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100 breaststroke), Connor Brown (fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 backstroke), and Michael Butler, (third in the 500 freestyle). All-Ohio boys relay teams include Donovan Liao ’21, Jacob Esposito ’22, Brown, and Podrez, who placed third in the 200 medley relay, and Esposito, Dietz, Lucas Greenberg ’22 and Madan Morris ’21 ,who placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.
