Stirn Hall

Hawken opened the Gates Mills campus in 1961 to 134 Upper School students. With enrollment having grown to over 520 students, Hawken undertook its most significant capital expansion in nearly 50 years during its 100th anniversary year: the construction of Stirn Hall.
 
This new academic building, made possible by an $8 million challenge grant from The Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation, has equipped Hawken's faculty with the physical space needed to execute the School's forward-focused educational mission. 
Highlights of this state-of-the art building include:
Renovation of classrooms to better reflect the curriculum and schedule
  • Expanded classrooms to allow for future innovations in curriculum and individualized learning
  • More student movement, engagement and small group activities
  • Teaching spaces as laboratories for experiential, hands-on, participatory and group learning
Creation of new specialty spaces allowing for Hawken’s forward-focused curriculum
  • The Miller Fabrication Lab; Media Lab; Media Production Studio and Screening Room
  • Expansion of programs such as Entrepreneurship, and Media Studies
Creation of a 21st Century Learning Commons
  • Inviting, open and flexible signature spaces for small groups, individual studying and multidisciplinary collaboration, all of which serve as valuable active learning methods
  • Home to the Lucier Family Writing Center, and the Learning Support Center
Expansion and Forward-Focused Redesign of a New Science Wing
  • Larger spaces that adapt to changing curriculum
  • Supports the expansion of programs such as STEMM Pathways
A building that connects to the beauty, light, and nature of the campus
  • Views, even from deep within the building, to the Great Lawn, woods, pond and an added orchard
  • Extensive skylights and two-story courtyards to bring natural light deep into the building
