Hawken Track Places at State Meet
The Track Team concluded its season at the OHSAA State Championship Meet on June 4th. The Hawken harriers competed in the 4x800m Relay and the 1600m Run. The quartet of Rachel McKay('13), Emily Heyd('13), Kerrin Sunshine('12) and Ally Markovich('13) ran a strong race, but came up just short of making it to the awards podium. Their time of 9:45.56 was good enough for a 9th place finish, just 2.4 seconds from placing. Rachel McKay gave the team a solid opening leg, followed by Emily Heyd and Kerrin Sunshine holding their own. Ally Markovich finished with a Season PR of 2:19, but was not able to get to the 8th position.
In the 1600m run, Ally Markovich was part of the pack of 14 girls for the first lap. At the start of the second lap, she bounced outside and made a move for the leaders. Ally held on to the third place spot for most of the next 2 laps battling the eventual winner from St Thomas Aquinas-Julia Pusateri and the Runner-up from Versailles-Tammy Berger. Ally's efforts netted her the 5th place spot on the podium in a time of 5:12.74.
The team improved from their 2010 performance in both events. In 2010, the 4x800m Relay finished in 11 place, while Ally was 8th in the 1600m run. As a Team, the Hawks finished 42nd out of 116 participating squads.
A second accomplishment of the state meet attendees was their recognition as Academic All-Ohio Athletes! Rachel, Emily, Kerrin and Ally all met the standards set by the OATCCC.
