Faculty Emeritus Lee Henry Passes Peacefully

Faculty Emeritus Lee Henry passed away on Saturday, April 24 at Olivenhain Guest Home in Encinitas, California. He was 96 years old.

Mr. Henry came to Hawken in 1956 to establish the Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools program and was also chairman of the Foreign Language Department. He remained here until his retirement in 1978. Prior to coming to Hawken, he taught at Plymouth State College and Proctor Academy. From 1942-1945, he was served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Lee Henry’s obituary reads, “On his 96th birthday, just three weeks before his passing, he laughed and sang with friends and family, and even danced with one of his loving caregivers. And not to be denied a last chance to let flow the music that was his soul’s very core, Lee sang “Besa me Mucho” (on his last day) into a Karaoke microphone, to the enjoyment of all his friends at Olivenhain Guest Home, and of course, not without that ever-present sparkle in his eyes.”

Mr. Henry is survived by his sister Mildred Tolles and by his children, Susan Snider, John Henry, and David Henry.
