Lower and Middle Schools Welcome Historian, Actors, and Artist to Lyndhurst Campus
Mr. Scully’s 7th grade history class was recently treated to a guest speaker, Mr. Alan Kopit, a Hawken parent, managing partner at Hahn, Loeser and Parks, and chair of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Public Education. Mr. Kopit joined students in the chapel on Lincoln's 200th birthday to share his insights about the president’s two most famous speeches, The Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address.
The subject matter was particularly relevant to 7th graders as it coordinates with their intensive study of the Civil War. After hearing Mr. Kopit speak about the importance and meaning of the famous orations, students will no doubt experience their upcoming visit to the Lincoln Memorial, where the speeches are inscribed, on a deeper level.
Earlier this month, third through fifth graders enjoyed a moving performance of Letters to Harriet Tubman at their February assembly. This performance was especially meaningful to the third graders, as the topic correlates with their study of American History.
Also in the Lower School, third and fifth grade art students spent a week with visiting artist and former Hawken parent and grandparent Henry Fusco, who introduced techniques that students plan to incorporate in their own artistic creations. In grade three, Mr. Fusco demonstrated drawing and painting techniques used to create a still life using tempera paint; in grade five, he demonstrated the same techniques for creating a watercolor landscape.
A former art teacher as well as a well-known artist, Mr. Fusco encouraged the students to draw freely without using an eraser and to think creatively about how to use and mix colors in their paintings.
At the end of the week, armed with fresh ideas and new skills, students felt much more confident about creating their own works of art. They will continue to work on their original still life and landscape paintings, which upon completion will be displayed at “The Evening of Art and Music” in April. They have invited Mr. Fusco to attend the event to view their completed masterpieces.
