Hawken's Model UN Earns First Batch of Awards at Conference

Though fairly new, Hawken's Model United Nations student group made an award-winning showing at the recent fall session of the conference of Cleveland Council of World Affairs' (CCWA) Model UN program for Northeast Ohio secondary schools.

Juniors Alex Ferris and Omar Diab received Honorable Mention for the UN Human Rights Council, juniors Raj Mainthia and Noah Whitehead recieved the Excellence Award for the International Labor Organization and juniors David Walters and Lauren Tatarchuk received the Excellence Award for the Commission on Population and Development.

Senior Becca Miller was given the highest award at the conference, the prestigious Gavel Award for United Nations Environmental Program.

This is the first crop of awards for the year-old student group.

Model United Nations is a worldwide education program for high school and college students that mimics the UN General Assembly. Students play the role of UN Ambassadors for member states making speeches, preparing draft resolutions, negotiating with allies and adversaries and resolving conflicts.

Over 160 Model UN conferences are held globally with approximately 100,000 students participating annually. The Cleveland conference with one session in the fall and one in the spring typically hosts 800 students from 35 high school throughout Northeast Ohio.

Awards are used to encourage excellence in the process of preparing for a conference, which involves researching policy of each MUN delegate's country, drafting speeches and make presentations at the conference.
