Thirteen Hawken Lower, Middle, and Upper School chess players were among 196 students from all corners of Ohio competing in four sections of the State High School and Middle School Chess Championships held in Cleveland on April 6-7.
After two days of six long and intense chess games, the Hawken Chess team of Brennen Keuchel’19, Destynn Keuchel ’22, Adithya Kalyanam ’21 and Cody Yang ’22 won the state title! Brennen and Destynn placed fourth and second respectively among 36 top Ohio players in the High School Championship section. In the High School Reserve section, Shivam Engineer ’22 and Liam Kerry ’19 placed sixth and third respectively among 27 players, while their team with Praveen Kumar ’22 placed fourth.
In the Middle School Championship section, Daniel Xu ’25 improved his USCF rating, while Walter Cain ’25, John Joyce ’25, Gavin Patterson ’25, Rahul Reyes Sundaram ’27, and Rohan Reyes Sundaram ’25 took the fourth place trophy in the Middle School Reserve section.
