Classroom Cleveland

Hawken School is committed to cultivating a student’s understanding of our city, and what it means to be a responsible neighbor. Through this understanding, students learn how our community’s challenges and successes mirror larger global urban trends.

Classroom Cleveland is a multi-year and multi-faceted program that engages students in academic study and community involvement in age appropriate steps with community-based partners. The developmentally appropriate curriculum spans Lower to Upper School and shares common themes of economic, community and environmental sustainability. For Upper School students, an optional semester capstone experience in economics and entrepreneurial studies is being developed.

Real World Beginnings
From half-day field trips to week long intensive programs of study, Lower School students participate in activities outside the classroom that start to build real world skills.

Insights Week
During the first week of January, Middle School students are immersed in one course of their choosing. These mixed-grade level and interdisciplinary based classes are inspired by the academic passions of the faculty.  Each of these courses takes the students beyond the Lyndhurst campus, using the city of Cleveland and surrounding areas as a classroom.

Examples of Insights courses are: A Taste of Cleveland’s Culture; Black History and Leadership in Cleveland; Digital Storytelling; Developing Community and Self Awareness Through Theater; and Flights of Fancy - The History, Physics, and Math of Flight.

Gries Center
Hawken’s urban campus, the Sally and Bob Gries Center located in University Circle, provides students a unique base from which to experience partnerships with world renowned cultural, educational, human services, medical institutions. Lower School curriculum includes Native American studies, Archaeology and Ohio Pre-History, and Leadership. Middle School students explore the city through service learning and the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. Some Upper School course offerings based at the Gries Center include 9th grade Humanities seminars, Homelessness (English elective), and Cleveland in Action (history elective). The Miller Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies is also located at the Gries Center.
