Physical Education

Grade 1
  • Understands differences between general and personal space   
  • Improves upon basic physical skills including balance, tracking and targeting, throwing, catching and jumping   
  • Builds endurance and muscular strength
  • Develops and assesses swimming skills.

Grade 2
  • Focuses on large motor competence and addresses the growth of whole body navigation through the development of equilibrium, flexibility and locomotion   
  • Includes balance and stability required for movements such as running, jumping, skipping, throwing, kicking and catching.

Grade 3
  • Demonstrates ability to kick, catch, throw, dribble and strike a ball   
  • Follows routine for fitness, aerobic and muscular strength exercises involving benches, beanbags and exercise circuits   
  • Follows routine and movements for square dancing, limbo, cotton-eye Joe, and polka
  • Performs basic gymnastics techniques and identifies safety rules for apparatus   
  • Continues to develop swimming stroke technique and increases distance Increases awareness of life saving and water safety skills.

Grade 4
  • Offers activities such as swimming, racquet activities, dance, soccer, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, basketball, small-sided games, softball, volleyball, and track and field events   
  • Utilizes intramural program to give students the opportunity to implement, in a competitive situation, the knowledge and skills acquired in the instructional phase of the program, and also enhances the values of team play, sportsmanship and fair play.

Grade 5
  • Focuses on specific skills and activities taught and applied to games;
  • Incorporates fitness focus in each unit of instruction;
  • Contains two units of swimming with a focus on water safety, survival techniques, and team building activities;
  • Utilizes intramural program to give students the opportunity to implement, in a competitive situation, the knowledge and skills acquired in the instructional phase of the program, and also enhances the values of team play, sportsmanship and fair play.
