LOWER SCHOOL UPPER ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM TEACHER (GRADES 4-5)

THE POSITION

Working under the direction of the Lower School Director, upper elementary teachers (grades 4-5) specialize in either humanities (language arts and social studies) or math, collaborating with teammates to develop and ensure high-quality learning experiences that align with the School’s mission. Upper elementary teachers use formative assessment data, including close observation of students and a range of both standardized and other common assessments, to understand student needs and provide personalized instruction. They take special care to advocate for students, maintain regular communication with families, and foster a nurturing and empowering learning community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a homeroom teacher to one section of upper elementary students, which includes regular communication with families, advocacy for students, and fostering a nurturing and empowering learning community.
  • Collaboratively develop, plan, and implement high-quality instruction in either humanities (language arts and social studies) or math, grounding learning experiences in the principles of mastery learning and project-based approaches.
  • Manage and respond to ongoing assessment data through timely, specific, actionable, and kind feedback to students.
  • Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Lower School Director or Head of School, such as participating in the admissions process and taking part in all-school events and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An advanced degree in Elementary Education is preferred
  • Demonstrated competence and leadership in curriculum development, instruction, and pedagogy in either humanities or math
  • Experience with Responsive Classroom and project-based learning is preferred
  • For humanities teachers: Experience with the reading and writing workshop approach is helpful but not required
  • For math teachers: Experience with Bridges Mathematics is helpful but not required
  • Exceptional understanding and demonstrated effectiveness in responding to the developmental needs of upper elementary learners
  • Facility with dynamic educational technology integration and learning enhancement
  • A willingness and eagerness to assist in the life of the School
  • Experience in establishing positive partnerships and constructive collaboration with colleagues and parents
  • A joyful enthusiasm for elementary learning
  • Flexibility, energy, creativity, high expectations, and a sense of humor
