COVID-19 Funding

Many members of our community have asked how they can help Hawken during the COVID-19 crisis.  There are two important ways you can support Hawken today and have an immediate impact.

1)     Hawken Fund
Every year, the Hawken Fund is the School’s top fundraising priority. The first way you can support Hawken is by maintaining support of the Hawken Fund and earmarking your gift to support any of these urgent needs:

  • Financial Assistance in support of current families facing hardship
  • Technology to support the investments we made to equip our faculty and students for remote learning
  • Ongoing efforts to ensure our campuses are safe

During these unprecedented times, the Hawken Fund remains essential. Even during times of remote learning, your support provides us with the flexible dollars needed to adjust now. Our ability to respond quickly and in ways that are needed most makes your gift vital.

2)     Angel Scholarship Funding
As we navigate these uncertain times, each of us is struggling to adjust to the realities of the global coronavirus crisis. There are still as many unknowns as there are knowns, and we are all in the process of determining what that means for us both personally and professionally.

At Hawken, we have been preparing for the likelihood of an economic downturn by continually focusing on making smart choices now to avoid difficult decisions in the event of a setback in the coming months. That approach, which prioritizes preserving the jobs of our faculty and staff while protecting the quality of a Hawken education for our students, served us well during the 2008-2009 financial crisis, and we are confident it will serve us well now. The federal government and employers all over the country are also working hard to find ways to do whatever they can to support and retain employees, but we anticipate that there are going to be short to medium term job losses as a result of the current economic environment.

We are receiving inquiries from current families who are experiencing job losses or notable financial reversals. We are also seeing families who run a small business that are now struggling. Our #1 priority as a school is to find a way to keep these students and families at Hawken. As such, we have established an Angel Scholarship Fund to help these students continue their Hawken educations. Support of our Angel Scholarship Fund will help us these families do so. You can make a difference for this anticipated need by giving here and noting Angel Scholarship Fund in the “Additional Gift Instructions” box.

CARES Act

The recently passed CARES Act adds a new deduction for donors who do not itemize when filing their tax returns. Non-itemizers can contribute up to $300 cash to most 501(c)(3) charitable organizations and claim a new “above-the-line” deduction on their 2020 taxes to reduce tax liability.
