Updated communications, contact tracing, and quarantine guidelines:

The Ohio Department of Health and the local Boards of Health have changed the recommendations and requirements for contact tracing and reporting based on what they have learned about the spread of the Omicron variant. The new guidelines recommend moving away from universal contact tracing, except in the case of cluster cases. Given this new set of guidelines and as our K-12 population is highly vaccinated, we will be shifting our approach in the following ways:

  • Contact Tracing:
    • We will shift away from universal contact tracing for students in grades Kindergarten - Grade 12, where vaccination is available. Detailed contact tracing will be done when a cluster of 3 or more cases (epidemiologically linked to a specific school setting and/or school activities) is present.
    • Classes without access to vaccination (toddler - prekindergarten) will continue with current contact tracing, with unvaccinated students who are identified as close contacts being asked to quarantine.
  • Communications: We will notify specific groups of a positive case, but will no longer include letters to or identification of close contacts (other than toddler - prekindergarten). The following will be our distribution groups for each division.
    • Kindergarten - Grade 5 - Primary classroom, after school activities groups, before and after care attendees
    • Middle School - Grade level advisory (with whom unmasked lunch periods are shared), and after school activities groups
    • Upper & Mastery Schools  - Whole division communications specifying the grade level case and extracurricular activities groups
  • Quarantine Guidelines (K-12):
    • Per CDC guidelines, anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 will be asked to isolate for at least 5 days after symptom onset. Positive cases will continue to work with our nurses and their own physicians to determine a return to school, as early as day 6 after symptom onset. Masks must continue to be worn through day 10, once a student is cleared to return.
    • Those who receive a notice of a positive case, per the above communications, should monitor for symptoms, and we ask that those who are unvaccinated test on day 5.
    • Per the Ohio Department of Health’s Mask to Stay protocol, asymptomatic students, regardless of vaccination status, may attend school if they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. In these cases, extra vigilance around mask wearing and distancing is required.
  • Athletics:
    • Regardless of vaccination status, asymptomatic athletes who have been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case may be asked to test in order to continue participation, per guidance from the Ohio Department of Health. We have used this approach based on each situation and based on the spread across any team or group, and we will continue to bring this flexible and more adaptable approach to athletics, given the variability between each sport in terms of risk factors for exposure, etc.
  • Testing:
    • We continue to receive at home test kits from the state, which we will continue to share with community members who need one. All nurses have kits for families to use.
