Seventh Grade Students Begin To Build Bridges

waskowitz
Seventh grade students have begun the Bridge Building Project; an interdisciplinary curriculum unit between Science and Math that challenges teams of students to construct a bridge that can support a certain amount of weight. Students recently met with Marc Ciccarelli, an architect from Studio Techne (the architectural firm that has also designed the new Middle School building)and were presented with a brief history of bridge design and construction. Students will then set-out in teams to blue-print their own bridge design. Following this, students will then need to call upon their understanding of the geometric proportions of bridge design so that their bridge can be constructed, using toothpicks and glue, in order to bear a particular load. The Project culminates in a contest where all bridges are tested to see how much weight can be supported. The bridge that supports the most weight, before collapsing, wins! Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting unti.
