Hawken Students Join Mock Trial Competition

Hawken was one of eight schools in Lake, Cuyahoga and Geauga counties to take part in last week’s 33rd Annual Ohio Mock Trial district competition held at Lake County Common Pleas Court in Painesville.

Teams represented at the competition argued a fictitious case that focused on Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. An article in the News-Herald reports, “In this year’s case, students argued both for and against whether an officer who shot a juvenile holding a bow and arrow in the shoulder during a suspected convenience store robbery should be convicted of felonious assault. The officer later learned the bow and arrow was a toy, and the boy holding the ‘weapon’ was simply in character after attending a medieval faire.”
