Middle School Mathematics Long Term Substitute Teacher (January–May 2026)

THE POSITION:
Hawken Middle School is seeking a highly organized, proactive, innovative, experienced, and passionate Middle School Mathematics Long Term Substitute Teacher to join our community as a full-time teacher for the spring semester of the 2025–2026 academic year. The successful candidate will join a vibrant department committed to deep mathematical thinking, problem solving, and real-world application.
This full-time, leave replacement role includes four core sections—three sections of 6th Grade Mathematics and one section of 6th Grade Pre-Algebra—as well as two co-taught Math Lab sections. The educator will also serve as a co-advisor and fully participate in the life of the Middle School, including grade-level meetings and support with student programming.
The Hawken Middle School mathematics department is committed to teaching mathematics through pattern recognition, problem solving, and interdisciplinary applications. Our curriculum leverages multiple mathematical tools and representations to enhance student exploration and discovery. Technology, including 1:1 laptops, DeltaMath, TI-Nspire software, Mathspace, and others, is embedded into our program to support dynamic and student-centered learning.
This is a 5-month, full-time, salaried-exempt position for the 2025–26 academic year.
THE ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach 3 sections of Math 6 and 1 section of Pre-Algebra
- Co-teach 2 sections of MathLab in collaboration with the math department team
- Incorporate student-centered, technology-enhanced learning into all classes
- Collaborate with grade-level and department colleagues to align curriculum and support students
- Serve as a co-advisor to a group of middle school students
- Participate in team meetings, department meetings, and student support discussions
- Engage in divisional activities and contribute to a positive school culture
- Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Middle School Director or Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred
- Middle school teaching experience, ideally including Pre-Algebra
- Strong understanding of adolescent development and middle school pedagogy
- Experience with educational technology and differentiated instruction
- A collaborative spirit, growth mindset, and enthusiasm for working with middle school learners
- Flexibility, creativity, and a commitment to fostering belonging and equity in the classroom
