Hawken Hosts 6th Annual Memorial Speech and Debate Tournament

On November 8 and 9, the Hawken Speech and Debate Team proudly hosted our 9th Annual Larry H. Banks Memorial Speech and Debate Tournament, welcoming 352 students and 102 judges from 21 schools across Ohio for two days of spirited competition. Our tournament is named in honor of Larry H. Banks, the founder of Hawken’s Speech and Debate program, and we are proud to continue this annual tradition in his memory, celebrating both his legacy and the dedication of our students.

The event was made possible through the hard work of 30 Hawken team members who helped run the tournament, along with 47 students who competed. Hawken students achieved impressive results:

*Rohan Power and Matthew Chu - co-champions in Policy Debate
*Jordan Reid - champion in Program Oral Interpretation
*Josie Bullock - 3rd place in Dramatic Interpretation
*Ayat Jaffar - 5th in Lincoln Douglas Debate
*Anne Taich - 6th place in U.S. Extemporaneous
*Ananya Balasubramanian - 6th place in International Extemporaneous
*Maia de la Cruz - 6th in Congressional Debate

Coaches Bob Shurtz and Rachel Warneke commented, "We are so proud of all our competitors and volunteers for their hard work at the Hawken Tournament, and we hope to ride this momentum into our next tournament in Mentor!"
