Students Impress with STEMM Projects

Hawken students took part in the 6th annual Bob Maciunas STEMM Research Symposium on November 17, presenting their projects before a panel of expert judges, parents, faculty and fellow students.

Cameron Blumenthal '15 took second place with "The Treatment of Breast Cancer Metastases wtih Nanochain Delivery."  Third place went to Devesh Modi '16, for his project "The Role of APJ in Cardiovascular Hypertrophy."

Dhweeja, Cameron and Devesh qualified to represent Hawken in March at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair. Judges selected nine additional students to represent Hawken at NEOSEF.  They are: Tim Holman '16, Nicole Kastelic '16, Katherine Pioro '16, Hilary Vogelbaum '16, Robby Gray '15, Michael Gerace '16, Julia Hillenbrand '16, Eileen Chen '15 and Tara Krantz '16.

Hawken’s STEMM program for juniors and seniors provides guided research in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine. The programs begins with a semester of Scientific Research 1, which develops scientific reading comprehension and critical thinking and also encourages broad thinking about experimental methods, limitations and questions.

Scientific Research 2, which spans spring and summer, challenges students to conduct research, work with
a mentor, and review journal articles on a topic related to their area of study. Students are required to complete a 160 hour summer research project with a mentor at NASA, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, VA Hospital, University Hospital or another research lab.

In the fall following the research component of the program, Scientific Research III develops student skills in scientific writing and oral presentation as they complete a work based on their summer project in the format of a journal article.

Each year, Upper School STEMM students present projects before a panel of judges at Hawken’s annual STEMM Research Symposium. Past research project topics include infectious disease, space travel, psychology of torture, breast cancer, and nanotechnology.
