Alumnae Spend Summer in Africa

Three graduates from the Class of 2013 spent their summers living and working in Africa.

Ally Markovich '13 spent 10 weeks pursuing her interests in art working at First Floor Gallery Harare, a contemporary art gallery in Zimbabwe's capital city. During her time at the gallery, Ali helped with website design, provided research to support funding for upcoming exhibitions and collaborative projects, and tried her hand at graphic design and marketing. She also had a chance to travel, visiting Victoria Falls (bungee jumping, elephant riding), Great Zimbabwe, the Chimanimani Mountain Art Festival, just to name a few. Thankful for her unique experience, Ali appreciated experiencing life in Africa not from a humanitarian lens, but from the simple perspective of working at an interesting job, pursuing academic interests, and finding her way and make friends in a big city.

On the other side of the continent, Rachel McKay '13 participated in a six-week credited Davidson College anthropology program in Ghana, studying Ghanaian culture. Her experiences included a service internship in the Cape Coast Regional hospital in pediatrics, public health and emergency. In addition to a homestay in Accra, Rachel also had a chance to travel, visiting Kakum and Mole National Parks, as well as Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, two historic sites that played a major role in the transatlantic slave trade.

Meanwhile, Sarah Doody '13 had a chance to experience human-nature connections in a summer split between New York City subways and the bush of remote Southern Africa, where she traveled to work on a documentary film project. Contrasting her densely urban existence as an NYU student with that of a remote South African film site teaming with servals, lions, caracals, hyenas and cape buffalos, Sarah reflected that despite everything we’ve done to attempt separating ourselves from nature, we can never abscond our deep connections as evidence through the African landscape dotted with majestic fauna and flora such as the marula and giant quiver trees.
