Intensive: Marine Science

As part of a year-long elective, the marine science class spent two weeks during Hawken's fall Intensive session at the Island School / Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas.
While on Eleuthera, students explored mangrove and coral reef ecosystems, worked with the school's hydroponic system, learned about invasive lionfishes, studied the effects of stress on sharks, and launched a long-term project censusing conch populations. In addition to snorkeling, students learned about freediving, sea kayaking, spelunking, and took a 'discovery scuba' class. You can read more of their studies and adventures in their blog "Hawken Marine Science 2013."

The Marine Science course reinforces concepts mastered in freshman-level biology, sophomore-level chemistry, and junior-level physics courses with the goal of developing a strong foundation in oceanography and marine biology.

Students are introduced to the marine environment through an extensive array of reading assignments, lecture-based discussions, field trips, projects, and laboratory explorations. The intensive trip to the Island School (and the associated Cape Eleuthera Institute) is an anchor to the curriculum that provides life-changing hands-on experiences.

In this video shot by students Max Pollack '14 and edited by Graham Duff '14, Hawken's Marine Science Fall Intensive comes to life.
