Cavs in the Finals? Thank Scott Looney

jb
Clevelanders everywhere hailed LeBron James as the reason for the Cavs` turnaround and the team`s first trip ever to the NBA Finals. But consider this: King James might not be the reason at all. Blasphemy, you say? Don`t be so quick to judge. The team`s rise from the ashes might just be due to the fact that around this time last year, Scott Looney was moving from Michigan to Cleveland to take over as the tenth Head of School at Hawken. And ever since he graduated from college, wherever he`s moved, that city`s basketball team won a national championship soon thereafter his arrival. In 1987, he moved to the Boston area after graduating from DePauw University. And even though the Celtics won the championship in 1986, the team`s triumph was probably due to the unpronounced, yet palpable excitement the area felt in anticipation of Looney`s imminent arrival. The Celtics also went to Finals the following year, but fell to the Los Angeles Lakers, so in Looney`s former days, his basketball mojo presumably wasn`t fully activated. From the Boston area, Looney moved to the Chicago area in 1991, which was the year that Michael Jordan led the Bulls to their first-ever national title. And in 1995, he moved to the Detroit area, but apparently the Pistons didn`t feel the glory of his presence until 2004, when they won the championship. But remember whom we`re talking about. The Pistons. They`re a slow, sad lot anyway. And even though the Cavs lost to San Antonio during this season Finals, no worries. They`re just getting used to the fact that Looney is in town. Last year, they had to go through the playoffs without Looney in town, so it`s understandable that the season didn`t end as hoped. Thankfully he`s been here almost a full year giving them time enough to feed off of whatever power he seems to have over basketball franchises and head into next year with title-winning gusto. So when the Cavs win the Finals next year, go ahead and give all of the credit to this \"Chosen One\" of which you speak. We at Hawken will sit humbly aside knowing that our dear Head, an unsung hero indeed, is probably the real reason they are the victors.
