Hawken well represented at Cheadle/Prendergast Event

On Saturday, May 5, actor Don Cheadle and scholar/activist John Prendergast spoke to over 2,800 \"upstanders\" from greater Cleveland, downtown at the State Theater. Hawken had a notable presence at the event, designed to promote a newly released book aimed at raising awareness about the genocide in Darfur. Senior Jenny Feuer, who is doing her senior project with one of the evening`s sponsors, Facing History and Ourselves, coordinated many of the intricate arrangements, along with juniors Rachel Alexander and Kat Ungar. Of the 20 students invited from only six schools to have a private audience with the speakers prior to the event, seven had Hawken connections. In addition to the three mentioned, sophomores Aaron Kohn and Emily Brueck, along with senior Camille Fields, attended the private session, as did Upper School history teacher, Ken Clark. Numerous faculty from both campuses, and parents, both past and present, were in the audience as well. So many Hawken Middle School teachers and students wanted to attend that buses were arranged to take everyone. Two parents, Trudy Weisenberger and Heather Ross-Lowenstein `79, serve on Facing History`s Cleveland Advisory Board.
