Hawken-JCU M.Ed. Program

Preparing 21st century teachers
This intensive, unique school-based Master's of Education program is cooperatively offered by Hawken School and John Carroll University. Designed to attract high-caliber liberal arts graduates and to provide them with professional preparation in classroom teaching in an intellectually demanding and stimulating environment, the year-long program leads to a Master's degree and a teaching license in Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 by the State of Ohio. Courses in the 46-credit program are taught by both John Carroll University and Hawken School faculty.

Program candidates work in Hawken Lower School classrooms under the daily guidance of Hawken mentor teachers. The program encourages graduate students to view teaching as an ongoing journey of discovery and learning, which will unfold throughout their careers. Equally important, graduate students must assume an active role in their own learning. Successful completion of the appropriate Praxis Series (Professional Assessment for Beginning Teachers) is required for certification, and successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination is required for the Master's of Education degree.

John Carroll University
The Department of Education at John Carroll University has a long tradition of attending to the multiple dimensions of the professional preparation of future educators. Four curricular strands are the focus of the program: the teacher as person, foundations, child study, and methods. Founded in 1886, the university prepares educators within the liberal arts tradition. John Carroll University is accredited by the Ohio State Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The campus is just minutes away from Hawken School's Lyndhurst site.

Hawken Mentorship
Partnering with the university in this endeavor, Hawken School offers a unique setting for selected candidates. Hawken, an independent school founded in 1915 on the principles of the progressive movement, continues to offer innovative educational experiences for its students and faculty. Building on traditions, Hawken School offers small class enrollments, ensuring that each student will have personalized instruction. Our faculty are highly experienced, master-teachers who support interns by connecting educational theory with classroom practice. They emphasize frequent self-reflection and assessment. Thus, each intern is assured quality mentoring.
