Senior’s Creative Work Featured in Cleveland Ballet Production
Last summer Mitch Maly'16 landed an internship that some students could only dream of: serving as associate artistic director of the “new” Cleveland Ballet company.
The Cleveland ballet went bankrupt in 2000 but is currently undergoing a revitalization under Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe and Executive Director Michael Krasnyansky. As Maly explains, the directors knew how important it was to approach their venture from a “budget-centric point of view,” adding “That’s where I come in. I’m willing to work for the experience.”
And while Maly benefitted from the experience, the company benefitted from his artistic talent, which is nothing short of impressive. Maly, who has earned numerous coveted awards for his art and whose forte is architectural sketches, was instrumental in every artistic “bit” that was part of the preliminary creative planning for the ballet company’s upcoming production of Coppelia, which opens in May. “I designed the initial Playbill cover which was used for grant proposals and promotions,” Maly explains. “I also created the early concept sketches for the set,” which features two houses on either side of a backdrop that depicts a village set in the mountains. After designing a small-scale version of that backdrop, Maly collaborated with a 3D design company in New York to add dimension to the design. This approach of using an enhanced backdrop enabled the company to save additional money on the set while maintaining an element of realism.
While Maly’s ability to contribute to the production was limited to some extent by union laws, he is eager to see the fruits of his labor come to life on the stage. Performances of Coppelia, suitable for all ages, will take place Friday, May 13 at 7 pm and Saturday, May 14 at 1 pm at the Ohio Theater at Playhouse Square. Click here for tickets.
