Upper School Conducts Service and Enjoys Giant Relay

Hawken’s Upper School took the day to perform community service both on campus and farther afield. The wide variety of service projects included, in part, sprucing up the Lower School playground; volunteering at non profits such as Community Greenhouse Partners, Ohio City Farms, Doan Brook Watershed, Judson, Medwish, Northpointe Homeless shelter, and Montefiore; making Hawken annual fund calls, preparing for a senior art show, and weeding Hawken’s Circle W Garden.

 

After a morning of service work, the entire Upper School participated in a Giant Relay competition amongst Hawken’s four houses – Mather, Bolton, Chester and Ansel. The competition began at Walton Stadium and moved through campus stops such as Holtrey Pool, Smith Lobby, the back woods and the AC Lobby before ending in Kennedy Auditorium. The relay included a wide variety of task for students to perform including: sack races, egg on spoon relay, high jump, building a shelter in the woods, jumping rope, card stacking, swim relay, finding a black jelly bean, scooter relays, building a fire, navigation exercise, cornhole toss, Frisbee golf, grape toss, Shakespear quote identification, solving a physics problem, a geography quiz, chess offense and defense, playing a tune on the piano, and finding a gumball in whipped cream.

 

Mather House won the relay race, Bolton placed second, and Chester narrowly beat Ansel in an exciting finish to the race that lasted about 2.5 hours!  Click here for photos.
