Hawken math team ties for first place

Five Hawken students recently tied for first place in a math competition that was a part of Cuyahoga Community College`s first-ever math and science fair. Freshman Omar Diab, sophomore Alec Lai, junior Myron Zhang and seniors Kenan Diab and Zach Rosskamm were given an hour to complete a set of ten college-level math questions. In the end, the team shared the win with a team from Kenston High School, earning not only a team trophy but also a Palm PDA and a medal for each team member. In addition to participating in the competition, students attending the fair met with a forensic pathologist (coroner), an actuary, a horticulturalist, chemist and an information technology specialist. "We wanted to introduce students to some fields not normally associated with math and science. We want to show students that there`s so much more that you can do with mathematics and science than just engineering or teaching," said fair organizer Mike McGraith.
