Robotics Teams Competes at Regionals

A team of 11 students in Hawken's Robotics Club attended the Northeast Ohio Regional FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) tournament in January. In existance for only two years, Hawken's club was one of the most novice groups to enter the competition.

During their preparation, team "RoboHawk" learned idea generation, mechanical design and engineering, introductory programming, and most of all, teamwork. The competition consisted of several rounds of head-to-head competition with robots completing tasks to earn points. In addition to the robot competition rounds, a panel of judges interviewed all team members and examined engineering notes each team kept throughout the year as they built and tested their robot.

Competing against 28 teams from schools from Ohio and surrounding states, Hawken won three of its five rounds, and finished 11th overall. "We felt that was a great showing for our first ever competition, and we learned a lot that will help the returning members of the team do even better next year," said Steve Ingrassia, Upper School Math Teacher and advisor for the robotics club.
