Mather Students are "Watershed Heroes"

Hawken students were recognized for four years of working to improve the watershed through removing invasive species, building and maintaining bio-swales, stream side clean-up and storm drain stenciling. Also noted was their collaboration with community activist and octogenarian, Ms. Virginia Havens, to improve Rockefeller Park through the installation of a park bench and garbage can along Martin Luther King Boulevard.

As part of a newly launched After School Service Program, five students volunteered for five weeks this fall with Mather partner Doan Brook. Students will continue the park improvement project with Ms. Havens during the winter months and resume watershed improvements in the spring.

All House service projects had a great start this fall. Ansel House continued its tutoring and health mentoring at Chagrin Falls Park Community Center every Monday and Wednesday with 25 students, and is ongoing throughout the school year. Bolton House added a tutoring project at Citizens Leadership Academy with 8 Hawken students joining others from CCIS schools every Tuesday for 10 weeks. The Winter season starts up again in January.  Chester House had 4 students distribute food  with CityFresh for 5 weeks and will start a 7 week winter session in January with the Heights Emergency Food Center.
