Hawken Students Find Adventure and Culture in Italy

lvl
History teacher Jim Newman and Latin teacher Nick Fletcher, along with 20 upper school students, recently returned from a whirlwind spring break tour of Italy. Jim - a 2001 Fulbright recipient to the American Academy in Rome Summer Program that focused on Roman archaeology, mythology, and art history - and Nick - a Latin teacher who has participated in two AP Latin workshops in Italy through the Taft Educational Center and traveled extensively throughout Italy - drew on their past experiences, knowledge, and contacts to plan and execute an unforgettable experience for the 20 lucky students. The focus of the trip was on ancient and Renaissance Italian culture and included visits to Hadrian`s Villa, Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Rome, and Florence. In addition to taking in the classical sites, art and architecture, and a visit to the Vatican, the trip included not only glimpses of the Rome marathon but seats at the AS Roma football (soccer) game, courtesy of Hawken parent Stan Shulman, who was able to obtain tickets to the sold out game through a contact in Rome. Read more about the trip and see photos on their blog.
