CareerNet Assembly Spotlights Hawken Parent Artists

Upper school students were treated to a panel of Hawken parents in performing and visual art careers at the CareerNet assembly held earlier this week. The panel featured Ms. Laura Perrotta (parent of Drew `09 and Dylan `10), actor with the Great Lakes Theatre and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival; Mr. Ralph Curry (parent of Michelle `11), cellist in the Cleveland Orchestra; and Ms. Heather Moore (parent of Henry `17, Leo `19, and Oliver `21), jewelry designer (who has, incidentally, created pieces for such high-profile clients as Beyonce and Demi Moore). The event, organized by Eleanor Anderson in conjunction with the Parents Association, was moderated by student representatives Terrence Embry `09 and Emily Brueck `09. Following a prelude of cello music played by Mr. Curry as students entered the auditorium, the panelists shared information about their backgrounds, career preparation, and most embarrassing moments with the students. A recurring theme was the importance of passion, hard work, and a healthy dose of good fortune as keys to success in highly competitive fields. Mr. Curry pointed out the role parental resistance can play in determining the true depth of one`s passion and commitment. "When someone says to you, +óGé¼-£You can`t do that,` you have to be motivated enough to push back and say +óGé¼-£I can`t not do it.` Without that insatiable inner drive and determination, they all agreed, a successful outcome is unlikely.
