Hawken graduate helps in resurgence of Cleveland schools

Hundreds of Cleveland Municipal School District students have Cecilia Carter `76 to thank for \"Smart in the City,\" a new summer arts and education program. Carter, the first African-American female to graduate from Hawken, is head of community affairs for UBS Wealth Management and is largely responsible for a $1 million grant the New-York based wealth management firm gave to The Cleveland Foundation to launch the program. As part of the program, the Cleveland fifth and sixth-grade students are spending the summer engaged in two arts forms of their choice (either dance, painting, drama, playwriting, photography or music), and using the two to hone their academic skills. Classes, which are are taught by professional artist/teachers, feature arts-centered learning in math, reading and writing. Students are also visiting to some of Cleveland`s finest cultural institutions. \"It was an incredible experience to return to my hometown to launch this program and work with The Cleveland Foundation,\" Carter said. \"The immediate impact of the dollars can be seen and allows UBS to provide financing, in-kind services and employee `sweat equity` to support local goals.\" After graduating from Hawken, Carter attended Northwestern University and earned an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Prior to joining to UBS, she worked for Burston-Marstellar and General Electric in communications and marketing.
