Meet Evin McMullen. She`s a junior at the Hawken Upper School who is not only a published author, but also an award-winning environmental activist. In the seventh grade, Evin and two other Hawken classmates founded Save Our Streams (S.O.S.), an action group which raises awareness about an endangered brook trout native to the Cleveland area. Since then, Evin has been awarded over $35,000 of grant money and won the Environmental Youth Award, which was presented by President Bush at the White House. She`s also received the Sea World/Fujifilm/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Award, and the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. "It`s cool to know that people appreciate the work I do, but it`s really a platform for my message. It gets the word out, you know, starts the revolution," said Evin of her success. Evin is also an active member of the Hawken community, serving on the student senate board as well as playing field hockey. With her free time, she loves writing and photography and often submits her work-book and music reviews and photographs-to Teen Voices and Teen Ink. In addition, she`s one of five people on the board of directors of the National Inventor`s Hall of Fame, who choose students inducted each year for bold research and creative inventions. "I like to keep a busy schedule outside of school-one filled with activities that make me think," she said. -Amy Murdoch `08
