Hawken Students Place First in Math Contest

Four Hawken Upper School students placed first in Ohio in Division 2 and tied for ninth overall in the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics Contest.  Eleven Hawken students participated in the event on Saturday, February 23 in which 1447 students from 97 schools statewide participated.

The scores of the top four students determined the team score.  The four students, along with their grade level and individual state finish in parentheses, were: Myron Zhang (12, T8), Alec Lai (11, T53), Samuel Milner (11, T53) and David Gerson (10, T122).

Division 2 consists of schools with enrollments from 78 to 143 students per grade level.  The eight higher scoring school teams were from much larger schools, having at least 258 students in each grade level.

As a result of their first place finish, the four team members have been invited to participate in the Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad to be held at Capital University in Columbus on Saturday, April 5.  Top scorers from that tournament will be invited to participate in the American Regions Mathematics League on teams representing Ohio.
