Debate Teams Places 1st at Invitational

The Hawken Speech and Debate Team kicked off 2015 with a bang as 56 students traveled to the Sylvania Invitational in Sylvania, OH.

As a team, Hawken placed 1st in Debate Team Sweepstakes out of more than 750 entries and schools from across Ohio.

In Congressional Debate:
  • Junior Phillip Hedayatnia was the Tournament Champion
  • Senior Larry Fulton placed 3rd
  • Junior Tim Holman placed 5th
  • Freshman Brian Sun was a finalist
  • Sophomore Nayan Rao was a semifinalist
In Policy Debate:
  • Juniors Noah Charnas and Derrick Liu placed 2nd
  • Junior Matt Zhu and Sophomore Kevin Yu placed 3rd
In Public Forum Debate:
  • Sophomores Ozan Ergungor and Ammar Lone advanced to the Semifinal Round
  • Seniors Max Schachere and Aman Nair advanced to the Quarterfinal Round, earning their 4th bid to the OHSSL State Tournament and completing their qualification
  • Seniors Emily Hedlund and Olivia Fried advanced to the Octafinal Round
  • Juniors Devesh Modi and James Swingos advanced to the Octafinal Round
  • Sophomores Josef Horwath and Connor Keuchel advanced to the Octafinal Round
  • Sophomore Kareem Danan and Freshman Vikash Modi advanced to the Double Octafinal Round
In International Extemporaneous Speaking:
  • Juniors Michael Gerace and Isaac Jacobson advanced to the Semifinal Round.
In United States Extemporaneous Speaking:
  • Freshman Andrew Gerace advanced to the Semifinal Round.
In Dramatic Interpretation:
  • Junior Mitchell Maly advanced to the Semifinal Round.
In Lincoln Douglas Debate:
  • Senior Jack Weisman advanced to the Quarterfinal Round
  • Junior Nicole Kastelic advanced to the Quarterfinal Round
  • Senior Swetha Kareti advanced to the Octafinal Round
  • Freshman Zade Akras advanced to the Double Octafinal Round
As a team, Hawken placed 1st in Debate Team Sweepstakes.

With just over 3 weeks until the OHSSL District Qualifying Tournament where students will compete to qualify to the state tournament, the Hawks will be working hard to prepare and are looking forward to a great championship season.
