Students Travel to Japan for 26th Exchange

During Spring Break, eight Middle School students traveled to Haibara, Japan to participate in the 26th Hawken•Haibara Community Exchange.

Each student, staying with individual host families, experienced a deep, immersive cultural adventure, visiting Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, big cities, and small towns. They explored food, dress, and cultural traditions very different from their Northeast Ohio norms. In the process, they certainly learned a lot about Japan, but more importantly, they learned a lot about themselves and their own culture.

Many students, reflecting afterward, shared that their sense of the world had been greatly impacted by the visit and that an interest in world cultures and travel had been awakened. At least one student shared that he plans to move to Haibara “as soon as he turns 18.”
