Head Varsity Coach Last year's assistant coachKatie Nelson '04has agreed to step in as our head coach for the 2019 season. Coach Nelson is enormously respected by our players, coaches, and all of us throughout our department and school. We are very excited for this coming season!
Coach Nelson has been rebuilding Hawken's softball program for the last two years, beginning in 2017 when we could not field a competitive team. We are currently projecting that in 2019, we will have enough girls to field both JV and varsity teams. Katie played volleyball, basketball, and softball in her Hawken Hawk days and was captain of both the volleyball and softball teams. She is the 2004 Old Board Award recipient for softball. Katie played collegiate softball at Taylor University, and also has an M.Ed in Independent School leadership from Vanderbilt University. She has been an elementary school teacher for ten years, the last seven years at Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby.
Ginger Theis Daly ’92 was the softball team’s leading scorer even as a freshman, was named All-League and All-District multiple times, and to this day holds multiple school records. In 1992, her senior year, Daly set a state record by hitting twelve home runs in a season, surpassing the previous state record of ten.
Her sixty-three runs batted in 1992 still ranks 3rd in state history for RBI in a season, an astounding accomplishment. She holds nearly every offensive statistical record for Hawken Softball, including a remarkable .536 career batting average.
Student-athletes are among the many groups that have been significantly impact by this crisis. With school campuses and many centers of athletic activity closed, these dedicated athletes do not have an opportunity to get the same amount of exercise. This submission highlights one of Hawken’s student athletes and the way that she has stayed active, both physically and with her team, during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order
