Josh in in his second year of coaching basketball at Hawken. He has thirteen years of experience coaching boys basketball at St. Edward High School, where he was also an alumnus and a math teacher. Josh was St. Edward Head Coach Eric Flannery’s top varsity assistant for the past two years.In 2019, the team reached the semifinals of the OHSAA State Tournament. Prior to that, Coach Nugent was the junior varsity head coach for five years and the head freshman coach for four years. Josh is a graduate of John Carroll University, and he received his master’s degree in Positive Organization Management and Change at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management.
Described by Head of School Scott Looney as “an ideal fit for our boys basketball programs at Hawken,” Josh impressed the search committee with “his character-first approach, his knowledge of basketball and coaching, and his core beliefs in using basketball as a vehicle to lead young men.” Josh remarked, “I have already had the pleasure of meeting some great people at Hawken. I cannot wait to meet the basketball family and the rest of the community. I’m excited to dive into the work together to see the heights the Hawken basketball program can reach.”
Josh is a member of the Upper School Math Department.
Hawken Athletics Hall of Famers Maurice Gray ’86 and Vic Schmelzer ’74 boast school records which stand today and may never be broken.
Maurice Gray is the all-time leading scorer for both career and season. In the 1984-1985 season Gray scored and amazing 653 points, and his career mark is 1,719 points!
Vic Schmelzer was a rebounding machine in his day. He holds the school career mark with 911 rebounds, highlighted by his 1973-1974 season, where he brought down 406 rebounds!
