New Hawken Football Coach Announced for 2018-19 Season

Brian Stephenson

Brian Stephenson has been an assistant coach at Woodberry Forest School for nine years, including the last two years as offensive coordinator. Woodberry Forest School is a top-flight boarding school in Virginia, and their football program is one of the best in the South.

Brian is a native of Lima, Ohio. A 2009 graduate of Yale, Brian was a member of the university’s football team and earned the 2008 Special Teams Player of the Year award. After graduating from Yale, Brian began his tenure at Woodberry Forest School, where he not only served as football coach, but also as the track and field sprint coach, English teacher and student advisor. Over the course of his tenure, Woodberry Forest School posted a record of 69-14-1 and won eight Virginia Prep League championships. The team was ranked first in the state for independent schools for five of his nine years at Woodberry, and it was ranked second in 2011 and third in 2012. Brian has coached and mentored numerous All-State players along the way. In addition, he has worked with dozens of collegiate football players and two NFL players.

Hawken Football History

Hawken's football history dates back to its earliest days on the Lyndhurst campus. Hawken started playing varsity football in 1964 and had an undefeated 10-0 season in 1965.

The Hawks have had a proud, winning tradition ever since. The News-Herald recently ranked the Hawken football program as #3 in the top 30 all-time best prep school football programs in the area. Hawken football has regularly sent players on to compete at the next level. O.J. McDuffie ’88 was an All-American at Penn State and went on to a standout career with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL.
