Senior Awarded Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Congratulations to senior Courtney Reed, who has been awarded the Princeton Prize in Race Relations award for “her impact in focusing her school’s administration on equity and inclusion solutions.”

The award includes a $1,000 prize, a trip to Princeton University for a symposium on race relations, and recognition at a reception and awards ceremony to be held at Cleveland’s Union Club on April 11.

A press release from Princeton University explains, "
Reed catalyzed the creation at Hawken School of a set of initiatives aimed at integrating equity and inclusion into the school’s execution of its mission.” Through a series of presentations, Reed, chair of Hawken’s Multicultural Club, initiated conversations about race by encouraging the School Senate to implement a diversity council, a cultural competency graduation requirement, and diversity training. She also helped to inspire the administration to include a new diversity statement on the school’s website, to develop affinity groups within the Hawken community, and to include a diversity and inclusion segment in the current strategic plan.

The Princeton Prize is a national service program recognizing outstanding high school students who show leadership by improving race relations in their communities.
