Upper School Intensives Engage Students in Real-World, Experiential Learning

This week an email alert went out to Hawken Upper School faculty and staff from history/humanities teacher Katrina Hagen. It read, “Tri-C’s Mobile Innovation Lab is working with our Hum 10 Economy Intensive today. Don’t be alarmed if you see small drones flying around the Shiverick Commons between 12:30 and 2:30 or so!” Unusual for some schools, perhaps, but not for Hawken – particularly during Intensives.

For those unfamiliar with Intensives, they can be summed up this way: one course, all day for three weeks to enable in-depth, immersive study of a single subject. Intensive classes take place not only on Hawken’s main campus but at various locations throughout Cleveland and around the globe. This term, some students are fulfilling a semester’s credit of physics or humanities; others are immersed in a hands-on, experiential study of engineering, homelessness, graffiti and murals, marine science, and psychology, among others.

View a video that explains more about the Intensives, and keep an eye out for the upcoming issue of the Hawken Review, which will highlight a number of this year’s Intensives!
