Stay in Shape Saturday - Featuring Danielle Turi '20

Student-athletes are among the many groups that have been significantly impact by this crisis. With school campuses and many centers of athletic activity closed, these dedicated athletes do not have an opportunity to get the same amount of exercise. This submission highlights one of Hawken’s student athletes and the way that she has stayed active, both physically and with her team, during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order
This Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has hit the United States, along with many countries across the globe, very hard. While the most devastating consequence is the widespread loss of life, its effects have been far-reaching in ways we never would have anticipated.

Staying in Shape with: Danielle Turi (Track and Field)
Danielle Turi is a senior captain for the track and field team. She competes in individual sprints as well as relays and is also one of the team’s few pole-vaulters. A member of the State Champion Girls Swim Team, Danielle will swim next year at John Carroll.

How Danielle stays in shape:
2-3 miles of distance running a day
Ab circuits
Pole-vaulting practice (until track was shut down)

How Danielle stays connected with her team:
According to Danielle, despite the physical separation, the team is constantly staying in touch. “We have a group chat that people are constantly talking to each other in.”

More about what Track at Hawken means to Danielle:
The track and field team, one of the largest at Hawken, has unfortunately been separated by the pause put on the athletics season. Danielle Turi, an integral team member and leader, puts in frankly, “It honestly just sucks so much.”

She says that despite the separation, the team is still connected and working hard in case the season comes back. She explains how the coaches have been staying in touch: “Coach Bradley sends a weekly email outlining our workouts for the week, lets the team know about any new information he’s learned, and helps the team stay positive.” Through these times when the team does not have much to do, they are able to lean on each other and their sport to help them through the quarantine.

Despite the team staying in touch, Turi notes that the absence of the season takes a toll. She explains, “I miss practicing with my friends and joking through our warm ups. I also miss seeing all the coaches and working out with Kris in the weight room.”

Turi notes, “I know it could be worse because I’m not missing what I could consider my main sport.” Despite this fact, she had lofty goals for the season as she was looking forward to improving and trying to make states again. “I went last year,” she recalls. “Unfortunately I did not run, but it was a blast and I really wanted to compete.”

The fact that she will not get the chance to experience her final senior season of playing sports is very unfortunate. This reality is one that has affected many members of the class of 2020, and the hope is that there will be some chance for them to compete in some way for their final athletic season.
