Senior Wins National Shakespeare Competition

Congratulations to Maria Schreiner ’19, who took first place in the 36th Annual National Shakespeare Competition, an event run by the English-Speaking Union and held at Lincoln Center in New York City on April 29!

Maria competed against 50 students from across the nation, performing as Rosalind From As You Like It and, in the final round of the competition, reciting Sonnet 29 (“When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,…”). For winning the competition, she received a full scholarship to attend the Midsummer Conservatory Program at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England.

More than 20,000 high school students participate in this competition each year. This was Maria’ second time qualifying for the semi-final competition in New York, having won regional Cleveland competition two years in a row. We are so proud that she was named the 2019 national winner!
