Lower School Students Honored at Exploravision Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to the Hawken Lower School students who were members of the three Hawken teams recognized in the 2018-2019 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision science innovation competition, the largest K-12 science competition designed to build problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills.

The third grade team consisting of Clare Petrov and Ari Ruch was designated as a Regional Winner - the top third grade entry in one of the six ExploraVision geographical regions and an honor received by only 24 of the thousands of teams who entered the competition. Two of Hawken's teams received Honorable Mention status, which is awarded to only ten percent of the teams who submitted projects.

The winning team of Clare and Ari envisioned a CLARI robot for a housebound student who is unable attend school. This robot would be equipped with sensors, and the student would wear VR and touch sensors from his or her home base to enable him or her to not only see and hear what is happening at school but to interact with students and teachers as well. To advance to the national competition, Clare and Ari were required to create a prototype of their robot, a video with the prototype, and a website that included their video.

Honorable Mention status went to the third grade team of Julia AziaNoa Coven, and Charlie Toth, who designed a Kindness Bot that could help people cope with sadness, anger, and other emotions, and to the fifth grade team of  Ali TarhiniMax LeebowMaxi Mattes, and Sammy Yang, who worked on a way to genetically alter parasites so that they would kill only cancer cells.

The three teams were recognized at an April 10 awards ceremony in the Goldberg Innovation Lab at the Lyndhurst campus, where the teams shared their work with the audience and received prizes that included certificates, powerful hovering magnets, and a Toshiba laptop for the school. Congratulations to all of the honored students as well as faculty mentor Pat Jewell -  and best of luck to Clare and Ari as they move forward in the National Competition!
