Two Hawks Named State Champion at Ohio Speech and Debate Tournament; Team Places Second in Sweepstakes

Hawken had a fantastic weekend at the state tournament held earlier this month in Columbus, with Ella Attell ’19 and Jared Shapiro ’19 crowned state champions in Congress and Program Oral Interp, respectively, and the team finishing as state runner-up in overall team sweepstakes – breaking the school record for states sweeps points.
 
This marks the fourth year in the last ten years that Hawken has finished in the top two in the state  - more top two finishes than any other school in Ohio. 

Other students honored at the awards ceremony for finishing in the top 6-8 in their event include: David Lyons ’19 and Izzy Culver ’19 (semis in Public Forum); Zayne El-Kaissi ’20 and Grant Griffin ’20 (quarterfinals Public Forum); Allie Dettelbach ’21, Victor Pan ’19, and Ally Sewell ’19 (quarterfinals in Lincoln Douglas Debate.); Amrita Mukunda ’20 and Andrew Liu ’19, Sinan Aktay ’19 and Ishan Gupta ’20 (quarterfinals in Policy Debate); Samia Menon ’19 (6th in Congress); Brennen Keuchel ’19 (6th in International Extemp).

Students who received awards prior to the awards ceremonies for making it far along in elimination rounds include: Krishna Sanaka ’21 (US Extemp); Cassandra Berlin ’20 and Emma Sedlak ’20 (Congress); Mourad Zeynalov ’21 (Lincoln Douglas Debate).
