Hawks Display Chess Prowess at Greater Cleveland Tournament
Eighteen Hawken Lower, Middle, and Upper School students were among 264 chess players who participated in the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League tournament on Saturday, March 2. Read on for highlights from the tournament.
- K-3 Reserve (U500): Sophie Baum ’28 tied for first with a perfect score, while Rohan Power ’28 tied for fourth among 43 players. Their team with Annalisia Honda ’29, Max Vriezen ’30, Frankie Yang ’28, and Wally Yang ’31, took clear first among nine schools.
- MS Reserve (U500): Matthew Roth ’24 took first place, while Andrew Baum ’25 tied for third among 37 players. Their team finished third among seven schools.
- Elementary Premier (U1000): Jack Neely ’27 and Eli Rutherford ’28 tied for fourth among 42 players. Their team with Sammy Yang ’26, took second place among ten schools.
- High School Premier (U1000): Shivam Engineer ‘22 tied for second among 33 players.
- Championship: Destynn Keuchel ‘22 tied for second among 22 players.
- Hawken teams in K-3 Reserve (U500) and Elementary Premier (U1000) sections, also shined based on their accumulating scores throughout the season.

- Elementary U1000: Second place (tie) among 11 schools - Jack Neely ’27 , Rahul Reyes Sundaram ’27, Eli Rutherford ’28, Sammy Yang ’26
