Chess Hawks Stand Out at GCSCL Tournament

Nineteen Hawken Lower, Middle, and Upper School students were among the 242 students who participated in the GCSCL (Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League) tournamenton Saturday February 9, 2019. Highlights are listed below.

  • Annalisia Honda ’29, Audrianna Honda '27, Gabrielle Saffore ’28, Lachlan Peacock ’28, and Valeria Kislyanski '27 participated in their FIRST chess tournament and earned their provisional USCF (United States Chess Federation) ratings.
  • (K-3 Reserve (U500): Rohan Power ’28 tied for fourth and placed ninth among 43 players. Team members Annalisia Honda ’29, Daniel Terburg or Xu ‘28, Frankie Yang ’28, Gabrielle Saffore ’28, Lachlan Peacock ’28, Rohan Reyes Sundaram ’25, Sophie Baum ’28, and Wally Yang ’31 placed first among seven schools.
  • 4-5 Reserve (U500): Audrianna Honda ’27 and Valeria Kislyanski ’27 tied for eighth and placed eighth and tenth respectively among 26 players.
  • Elementary Premier (U1000): Rahul Reyes Sundaram ’27 and Sammy Yang ’26 tied for fourth and placed eighth and fifth respectively, while Jack Neely ’27 tied for 12th and placed 13th among 38 players. Team members Jack, Rahul, and Sammy placed second among eight schools.
  • High School Premier (U1000): Shivam Engineer ’22 placed seventh among 22 players.
  • Championship: Destynn Keuchel ’22 placed first among 16 players.
