Grade 6
  • Studies the fundamentals of color theory, the elements of art, and art history   
  • Emphasizes observation skills, communication, cooperative learning, creative thinking, problem solving, and self-assessment   
  • Engages in numerous interdisciplinary projects with other academic  departments: Colonial Portrait, Music as Inspiration, etc   
  • Focuses on developing more sophisticated construction and creation skills using diverse media: oil pastels, charcoal and conte crayon, tempera paint, chalk pastels, graphite, clay, and recycled materials   
  • Introduces global connections through art: Create Peace Project   
  • Uses technology to aid in art creation


Grade 7
  • Builds on studies of the fundamentals of color theory, the elements of art, and art history   
  • Emphasizes observation skills, cooperative learning, creative thinking, communication, problem solving, and self-assessment   
  • Engages in numerous interdisciplinary projects with other academic departments: Biomimicry, Art as Conservation, Graphic Memoir   
  • Focuses on developing more sophisticated construction and creation skills using diverse media: photography, watercolor, graphic art, printmaking, pen and ink, conte crayon, charcoal, silk painting, and edible-art   
  • Introduces new ways of using technology to aid in art creation   
  • Develops the awareness of art as a pervasive and powerful cultural component   
  • Explores the idea that art can be a tool students can use to make a positive impact in our world.
Grade 8
  • Builds on studies of the fundamentals of color theory, the elements of art, and art history   
  • Emphasizes observation skills, cooperative learning, creative thinking, communication, problem solving, and self-assessment   
  • Engages in numerous interdisciplinary projects with other academic departments: Culture of Me, Art as Social Commentary, Advertisements and Media Literacy, etc.   
  • Focuses on developing more sophisticated construction and creation skills using diverse media: photography, graphite, graphic art, pen and ink, conte crayon, charcoal, multi-media sculpture, and ceramics    Builds on use of technology to aid in art creation   
  • Connects students to more Global components using art as the tool of communication   
  • Develops the awareness of art as a pervasive and powerful cultural component   
  • Pushes students to use art as a tool to make a positive impact on our world
