Hawken Athletics Announces Two New Wellness Initiatives with the Opening of McAfee Sports Medicine Clinic and a Partnership with Center for Peak Performance

Hawken Athletics is thrilled to announce the opening of the McAfee Sports Medicine Clinic. Made possible through the generous gift of Hawken alumnus Alexander “Sandy” McAfee ’42, this new construction represents Phase II of the Kleinman Wellness Center and will provide significantly expanded space for preventative and rehabilitation work, and the treatment of injuries. The sports medicine clinic construction project also included the conversion of Hawken’s old archives room and an adjacent locker room into two new spaces that will be used for both athletics teams and Human Performance.

The clinic, conveniently located just inside the east entrance of the sports center near the student locker rooms and coach facilities, is managed by our University Hospitals athletic trainer Sarah Royan. With growing enrollment and an increasing number of students participating in sports, Sarah’s work had far outgrown the small athletic trainer room in our sports center. This much-needed additional space was intentionally designed to provide separate spacious dry, wet, and storage areas as well as a private office for consultations and files.

Hawken’s relationship with University Hospitals Sports Medicine Institute provides amazing support for our athletes. Essentially, Hawken’s student-athletes get the same level of care as the top athletes in Cleveland. UH is constantly involved in conducting research in sports medicine, and our students are the beneficiaries of some of the groundbreaking techniques employed to address injuries.

Concurrent with the opening of the sports medicine clinic, Hawken has launched a partnership with the Center for Peak Performance (C4PP) to support our student-athletes’ success on and off the field of play. C4PP will provide sports performance and psychology services to Hawken’s teams, coaches, and student-athletes. This new program is made possible by a generous gift from Roger and Marlene Klein.
